Becoming a parent is a major life adjustment . With all the changes a new baby brings to the family, it’s no surprise that you may find your emotions changing quickly from up to down to back up again. This is normal and usually levels out as you settle into caring for your new baby at home.

POSTPARTUM BLUES About 70% to 80% of new parents experience some negative feelings or mood swings, known as “baby blues.” These emotional upsets are common, typically start within a few days after baby’s birth, and usually last from a few days to a few weeks. In most cases, baby blues are related to changing hormones and fatigue. Symptoms • Crying • Impatience • Irritability • Mood changes • Poor concentration If you or your family feel that your symptoms are more severe or have lasted longer than 2 weeks , talk with your health care provider about available treatment and support. What can help • Get plenty of rest and sleep to regain your strength • Ask for help and be specific about what you need • Spend time outdoors, move around, walk, or dance • Spend time with your partner or a support person • Reach out for community or online peer support • Pamper yourself: aromatherapy, massage, warm baths (after approved by your health care provider)
