MemorialCare - Your Guide to Postpartum and Newborn Care

Maternal Newborn Safety Plan

• •

Our healthcare teams at MemorialCare want you and your baby to be safe during your stay with us. Here are some things you can do to help keep you and your baby safe. Safety: • Sleeping with your baby in your bed or chair puts your baby at risk for suffocation and falling. Please be aware that babies have been dropped because of parent exhaustion. Giving birth is hard work, and it’s easy to fall asleep while holding or feeding your baby. • Use a supportive pillow while feeding your baby to help prevent a fall. Any time you start to feel sleepy while holding your baby, place your baby safely on his/her back in the crib. • If you are unable or too tired to get up safely and place your baby in the crib, please have your partner in care help you or call a team member to assist you. • Always place your baby on his/her back to sleep in the crib. • Always make sure that anyone holding your baby is awake and alert. • During the night feeds, have your partner in care “ Stay with Me ” (having an alert adult next to you while you are feeding baby) to keep you alert. • If your baby falls or is dropped, call your nurse immediately. Security: • You, your baby, and your partner in care will have matching identification bands that will be placed on your wrists immediately after delivery. • Expect all team members to introduce themselves to you when entering your room. Team members must wear a MemorialCare badge with their photo and name on a pink background. If you are not sure who the person is, do not give your baby to them. Call your nurse immediately. • If your baby is taken from your room by a team member, make sure you know the reason why, and when your baby is returned to you, the team member must match your band to your baby’s band. • Make sure your baby is never alone in your room. Please let the team know if you need to use the restroom or leave the room and your partner in care is not present to watch your baby. • If you are walking in the hall, keep your baby in the crib, and keep the crib in a flat position. • Push from the end of the crib, holding the handle. Do not allow children to push or pull on the crib.
