A New Beginning
How Do I Know My Baby is Getting Enough to Eat?
A common concern many new moms have is whether their baby is getting enough to eat. The number of feedings your baby has each day is important. Your baby’s intake of breast milk is usually reflected by the output of wet and dirty diapers. There are many clues that indicate that everything is going well. • Baby has 6 to 8 wet diapers with urine that is light yellow once milk is in greater supply. • Baby passes meconium the first 1 to 2 days after birth. • Stools change to a mustard color and are runny and seedy in texture once the milk is in greater supply. • Baby has 3 to 4 stools beginning by day 4 in the first month and may stool a little after each feeding. • During feedings, baby relaxes their body, opens their fists, and lets go of the nipple when finished. • Breast feels less full after feeding. • You hear baby swallow; this is more obvious when your milk is in greater supply.
