Cleaning Your Breast Pump Parts

OPTIONAL STEP • If the dishwasher doesn’t have a sanitize cycle, breast pump parts, container, and bottle brush can be sanitized using microwave steam bags or boiling water (boil for 5 minutes). Remove with tongs. • Use the manufacturer’s directions for microwave steam bags. STORE SAFELY • Ensure the clean breast pump parts, bottle brush, and wash container have air-dried thoroughly before storing in order to help prevent germs and mold. • Store dry items in a clean, protected area. If you need help while hospitalized, your nurse or patient care technician will be happy to assist you. CLEANING RENTAL PUMPS If you have a rental pump, we ask that you clean it and its case with any all-purpose cleaner before returning it. The back of our rental agreement, line 9, states that we reserve the right to charge a cleaning fee of $10 if your pump is not returned in clean condition. RETURNING RENTAL PUMPS You do not need an appointment to return your pump to one of our hospital locations: Northside Atlanta Women’s Center (A Wellness Place), or Northside Forsyth Women’s Center (Patient Admissions), or Northside Cherokee Women’s Center (3rd floor nurses station). In Atlanta, pumps may be returned Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Forsyth, pumps may be returned anytime to the patient access desk. Pumps rented in Cherokee can be returned anytime, day or night to the Women’s Center Labor and Delivery registration area. You will receive a RETURN RECEIPT that terminates your contract and is your proof of return.

There are a few different ways to clean your breast pump parts. Always remember: • To clean your breast pump parts immediately after pumping • Do not clean the breast pump parts in the sink; use a separate container used only for this purpose • The tubing does not need to be cleaned

WASHING BY HAND

Rinse all parts (except the tubing) that come in contact with breast/breast milk under cool running water to remove remaining milk.

Place the parts in a clean container used only to wash pump parts.

Add soap and hot water to the container.

Scrub items using a clean brush used only for pump parts.

Rinse under running water or submerge in fresh water in the container.

Air-dry clean breast pump parts on an unused towel or paper towel in a clean separate container used only to dry pump parts.

DISHWASHER Check the manufacturer instructions to ensure the breast pump parts are dishwasher safe.

Place small parts into a closed-top basket or mesh laundry bag.

After adding soap, choose a hot water setting on the dishwasher and a heated drying cycle (some dishwashers have a sanitizing setting).

Remove breast pump parts from dishwasher with clean hands.
