Frequently Asked Questions about Making Formula Heating, Storing, and Milk Storage Guidelines
Should I heat my baby’s formula?
It’s not necessary to heat formula. But if you do, place the bottle under warm, running water without getting
water on the nipple or inside the bottle.
To test the temperature to make sure it’s not too hot, place a few drops of warmed formula on the back of your hand or wrist. The formula should feel lukewarm.
How should I store formula?
Never store formula in your car, garage, or outdoors. Also don’t choose a place where the
temperature is not regulated. This holds true even if you live in a colder climate. The cold is just as dangerous for formula as the heat. Keep your formula in an inside area that’s cool and dry. If you’re using a scoop, keep it clean, and always put the lid back on the container after opening.
NEVER heat your baby’s formula in the microwave. Microwaves heat food unevenly, making “hot spots” that can burn the mouth and throat of your baby.
How much time do I have to use mixed formula?
The saliva from your baby and the formula in the bottle can cause bacteria to grow. So use it within 1 hour from when the feeding begins.
Use prepared formula within 2 hours of opening or mixing it.
Store open or mixed formula that has not been used for a feeding in the fridge for up to 24 hours .
If there’s any formula in the bottle after a feeding, pour it down the drain. Never freeze leftover formula to use later.
