Day 1 Tips : 1–2 hours after birth, babies become sleepy. This may last up to 24 hours. They still need to get at least 8-12 feedings in 24 hours. 1. Feed your baby when you notice any hunger cues: lip smacking, opening mouth, tongue thrusting, rooting, putting hands to their mouth. 2. Wake baby if baby doesn’t wake on his/her own by 21/2 hours. Tips for waking baby: rub their back, change their diaper,

change their position, talk to them or hand express some milk on your nipple so they can smell it. 3. Keep baby with you so you can start learning your baby’s behavior and respond to their needs.

DAY 2 GOALS: • At least 8–12 feedings in 24 hours • SSC before feedings • 2 wet diapers • 2 dirty diapers — may be black or dark green

Day 2 Tips: Your baby may want to eat every hour for several feedings in a row. This is called “Cluster Feeding” and it is normal. Continue to put baby skin-to-skin as much as possible before and after feedings. Pace feed baby to prevent them from choking and overeating. 1. Burp baby half-way through and switch sides holding baby. 2. Continue to keep baby with you to learn baby’s behaviors and respond to baby.
