Baby’s First Doctor’s Office Visit

Your baby’s discharge instructions will state when they need to have their first pediatric office visit. It is usually 2 to 3 days after hospital discharge. Be sure to schedule this appointment while you are still in the hospital. Arrange to have someone take you to the office visit since you will not be able to drive.

What to Take to the Office Visit • The paperwork you received from your nurse that has important information about your baby’s birth and hospital stay • Your baby’s written discharge instructions • Completed feeding and diaper logs after your baby’s hospital discharge • A list of your questions and concerns What You Can Expect • A complete physical examination with weight and measurement checks

Questions Your Baby’s Provider Will Ask: • How often and how much is baby eating • What are baby’s sleep patterns like • How many stools are they having and what do they look like • How many wet diapers do they usually have in 24 hours • How are you doing as a new mother and do you have any questions Topics Usually Discussed • What to expect over the first month • When you should call them with concerns • Immunizations

Helpful Hints

• Try to schedule the appointment at a time that works best for your baby’s feeding schedule. • Give yourself plenty of time to prepare and get to the appointment. • Take someone with you, not only to help but also to listen and remember what was said. • Dress your baby simply because you will need to remove their clothes. • Pack a diaper bag with extra diapers, wipes, clothes, pacifiers (if using), and a blanket. • Do not forget your baby’s hospital paperwork that was given to you at discharge.
