My Plan for Help at Home the First Few Weeks

Now is the time to think about your plan for help at home. Your partner can help contact your friends and family and finalize arrangements while you are still in the hospital.

Take the time to review the “My Plan for Help at Home” chart on the following page. Discuss this with your partner, family, or friends who would be available to help and how they can help you best. When making your plan, follow these recommendations: • Focus on yourself and your baby • Get plenty of rest and sleep • Eat healthy to keep up your energy • Set realistic expectations and be flexible • Keep things simple • Don’t stress about housework • Watch for unexpected changes • Ask for and accept offers of help • Hire outside help for a few weeks • Do only what you have to do — prioritize • Monitor yourself for post-birth warning signs • Listen to your body • Schedule breaks • Do something you enjoy each day HELP YOUR FAMILY TRANSITION Consider your family’s needs as they adjust to a new family member. Both older siblings and pets need time to adjust to baby’s arrival. Plan ahead to make sure your older children feel included and can bond with the baby too.
