Always follow baby’s hospital discharge instructions!
WHEN TO CALL 911 FOR YOUR BABY
• Color looks blue/gray, including their lips, hands, skin • Stops breathing • Working hard to breathe • Unresponsive
• Has a seizure • Breathing very slowly or very fast • Can’t wake baby • Vomiting frequently/forceful, green vomit • Arms and legs floppy
When seeking emergency care at a hospital, go to one that provides care for pediatric patients, such as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta OR as directed by your baby’s pediatric provider.
WHEN TO CALL YOUR BABY’S HEALTH CARE PROVIDER
• “Just doesn’t seem right” and you are worried • Eyes (after 3 days old)
• Signs of dehydration — cracked lips, sunken eyes, no wet diapers for 6 hours • Umbilical cord - Redness - Foul smelling - Pus-like discharge - Umbilical cord does not fall off by 10 days • Circumcision - Does not urinate within 24 hours - Excessive swelling
- Redness - Swelling - Drainage • Temperature — below 97˚F or above 100˚F • Patches of white in baby’s mouth that don’t wipe off • Elimination - Less than 6 wet diapers each day (24-hour period) by 4 days old - No stool for 3 or more days - Very watery or very hard stools • An unusual or severe diaper rash or patches of white pimples • Jaundice — increasing yellow tinge to skin or eyes • Seems floppy and arches back
- Redness - Bleeding - Foul smelling • Feeding problems
- Refusal to eat for 2 to 3 feedings in a row - Forceful vomiting (not just spitting up) • Activity - Listlessness - Intense crying for prolonged time - Drastic behavior changes - Increased crying
