ROLE OF LABOR PARTNER

• Give words of encouragement during labor • Help balance light activity with rest • Time contractions and record them for health care provider • Offer diversions such as music, playing cards, or a movie • Be aware of reaction to contractions; check relaxation and breathing • Listen attentively and offer plenty of praise • Alert the health care provider and birthing facility • Check the weather; have the car (or a ride) available

• Find a balance between rest and light activity • Getting up and walking around can be helpful • Eat food and drink liquids if you want them • Use slow, relaxed breathing if it works for you • Begin comfort measures as contractions get stronger
