Preparing Formula for Your Baby

Now that you’ve picked out a formula and gathered your supplies, it’s time to mix your baby’s formula. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind.

FOR POWDERED FORMULA Measure water from a safe source. Then, add the powdered formula using an unpacked level scoop as directed. FOR LIQUID CONCENTRATE Shake the bottle of formula before mixing. Measure water from a safe source and add it to the formula as directed. FOR READY-TO-FEED FORMULA Shake the bottle or can formula. Pour the amount needed into the baby’s bottle. You don’t need to add water.

Clean your work surface with hot soapy water.

Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

If you can’t wash your hands, use

hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Watering down formula is dangerous. DON’T DILUTE!

The AAP warns against watering down formula because it can:

Check the “use by” date of formula. Don’t use it if it’s past the date.

• Reduce the amount of nutrients your baby gets • Slow your baby’s growth and development • Cause electrolyte imbalance and seizures Never add different amounts of water or milk to formula. Babies do not need extra water. If you’re having trouble affording formula and adding water to make your formula “go further,” there’s help. Ask your health care provider for resources.

Always follow the manufacturer’s directions on the formula to correctly prepare the amount needed.
